The gathering of information has become increasingly simplified and the vast amount of information that is available to anyone with an internet connection grows every day. If gathering information has become easier, storing, cataloging and retrieving that information should be easy as well. Evernote is an application that has transformed the way in which I prefer to store informational resources. Evernote can be adapted for the individual. Here are some ways that Evernote became a vehicle to enrich my personal knowledge base.

EDC 503 required each student to gather information on issues in education. The class created individual RSS feeds that enabled us to have news stories and blog entries at our fingertips. Through Evernote and the Evernote Web Clipper I was able to organize and analyze the articles that were of personal interest to me with great ease. In addition the articles were tailored to my interests, thus making the experience personal. Evernote was instrumental in assisting me in organizing and simplifying information regarding my interest in education and educational reform.

Developing personal learning strategies using Evernote is something that makes the experience more individual. I appreciated the simplification of the article in the Evernote Web Clipper. Using the Web Clipper I was able to be far less distracted when reading an article using the simplified article option. The absence of links and distracting articles keeps me focused on the reading. In addition to making the article simplified, I developed a strategy in which I could put articles that are related in the same folders. Using tags such as, school report, teacher retention, EDC 503, and family I can find what I am looking for quickly. In addition to folders I added tags in cases where articles needed to be in different folders. This method of cataloging the information makes it easy to find what I have read, what I need to read and the information to support my research.

Evernote has evolved into more than just an organizational tool for academic notes. I have enjoyed using Evernote across multiple platforms to transfer pictures, and to write lists and have them available on my phone. I use Evernote for storing grocery lists and other “to do” lists. Taking Evernote from a school product to a lifestyle product can benefit me by having constant reminders of what interests me and prevents me from putting academic thinking aside.
As a future elementary educator I can see having a class Evernote. Pictures of class projects can be taken, stored, and shared. The ability to have an organizational method to efficiently access materials that may not be used every day, but need to be accessed in a timely fashion, such as maps, charts, bus schedules, etc. I can see the potential benefit of a grade level teaching team sharing Evernote with each other as a way to collaborate.

If there is any shortcoming to my Evernote experience is in my organization. I need develop strategies to put unread articles into separate folders and then move them to the appropriate folder later. Also, at times it feels like it could be an electronic junk drawer, where information goes because I may need it some point in time.

At the conclusion of EDC 503 I will continue to use Evernote as an extension of my Personal Knowledge Base and look forward to seeing how this developing method of gaining knowledge continues to evolve.
